Default diabetes type 2 medication question?

im on metformin 2 times a day 500mg. yesterday for example i ate a chicken salad for dinner. mainly green veggies and chicken. i took my medication with dinner. little by little i started to feel really funny. two hours later i check my blood sugar and it was 67. i didnt feel hungry and ate thought i ate plenty at dinner? im trying to lose weight as well.

my question is how does the medication work? does it gradually keep your blood sugar down or is it immediate? because i had ate a meal that was really low in carbs, is that why it was a little low?
ive been taking this for 6 month now and no other problems. i discussed the lower blood sugar readings with my doctor and she didnt seem too concerned. i have been asking these questions on here cause i forget to ask her sometimes.

metformin actually stops your liver from releasing its excess stores of glucose that are there for energy in times of need and also every morning b4 you get up to give you energy for the day. its possible your diabetes isnt that severe at this point and you maybe could take less metformin. you should track your sugars closely along with what you eat at what times and present your trackings to your doctor that will help see if theres a pattern and help determine your needs for meds

Metformin is an oral diabetic medication that does NOT lower glucose levels, what it does is help prevent them from going to high by it's action on the liver which causes your liver to release stored glucose in the event your numbers are going to low, it also helps the body's cells to accept insulin more readily.

For many people it may take days or weeks for Metformin to become effective as your body needs time to get used to it.

It may be that Metformin is doing it's job to well with you and your liver isn't releasing enough glucose into your system, although a blood sugar reading of 67 isn't very low for most people, it may be for you which is why you felt "funny".

I would discuss this thoroughly with your doctor on your next visit, perhaps you need to reduce your dosage to once a day or take Metformin extended release.

Good luck
