Default diabetes type 1..........

a friend of mine is a diabetic, type 1 so she has to constantly take injections dependent on if she is "high" or "low". now i'm assuming low is when she's not had enough suger and high is when she's had too much.

how can i tell when she is high or low? and what would i do - worst case scenario she doesnt take her injections and goes into diabetic fit?? what quick actions need to be taken (other than obviously calling an ambulance)

Hypoglycemia is not enough sugar in the blood. Signs and symptoms of this could be tremors, confusion, sweating, and in serious cases coma and death. To treat this, use fast acting, easily absorbed sugars such as 8oz of milk or orange juice. Monitor glucose frequently during the day such as before every meal. If it gets too low and they are showing signs of distress, call 911.

Hyperglycemia is too much sugar in the blood. Symptoms of this is frequent urination, excessivde thirst and hunger. An insulin injection would be the treatment and dosage must be adjusted depending how high the blood sugar is. If it gets too high, say over 400, going to the hospital would be recommended and an insulin IV would be started typically, all depending on the patient status of course. Diabetic ketoacidosis is what happens to type I diabetics when the blood sugar gets too high and the only source of energy is to break down fats. When this occurs, the breath usually smells fruity from the ketones. This would be another situation to get to the hospital.

Ask her if she carries her glucose monitor with her and ask her to teach you how to use it. That would be the best thing to know. This way you can tell if she is high or low.

If she doesn't have it on her some of the classic symptoms of low blood sugar are shakiness, unsteadiness, sweating, sudden loss of energy (I mean like you can't even keep you head up) and incoherence (I start babbling uncontrolably). Blood sugar drops to unsafe ranges quicker than it rises to unsafe ranges, so it is extremely important to get juice, milk, hard candy or glucose tablets because these things are fast acting (which is important).

As for high blood sugars, symptoms are shakiness, dehydration, nausia and loss of energy. Really the only thing you can do in this instance is to call 911 (especially if she is non-responsive) and tell then that you have a diabetic in need of help (its important that you let them know what they're dealing with). But these symptoms usually occur gradually so that's something that the person needs to keep an I on themselves.

Its awesome that you're interested in learning about your friend. You should talk to her about it so that you guys can coordinate an emergency plan. If she's comfortable with her diabetes, you shouldn't feel bad about asking her questions.

one of my good friends has had type 1 for about 10 or 11 years and she can get high and low very easily. she told me when she is low she gets kinda shaky and she always carries around a juice box and granola bar to stabalize her. it case she faints or emergency she brings a little tube of sugar icing in her purse. i forgot kind of what she needs that for but i know its for emergency.
