PRAMLINTIDE
Working
Pramlintide limits the glucose rise after meals by slowing stomach emptying and lowering the
postmeal glucagon levels. It also causes modest weight loss: two to four pounds on
average.
When beta cells release insulin, they also release another protein called islet amyloid
polypeptide (IAPP or amylin). The normal function of IAPP is not well understood, but it may have a role in
appetite regulation. Pramlintide is a modifi ed form of IAPP. It is approved for use by people with type 2
diabetes who are using insulin and for people with type 1 diabetes. Pramlintide is given by injection just
before a meal at the same time as the insulin.
Side Effects
The main side effect of Pramlintide is nausea and vomiting,
especially in people who have gastroparesis.
