NERVE INJURY TO BLADDER AND PENIS
When the bladder nerves are affected by prolonged high glucose levels, the
bladder may not empty properly, and this can cause urinary incontinence and bladder infections. The problem can
be due to either decreased or increased bladder muscle activity. Often an evaluation by a urologist is
necessary. If the bladder tends to contract and empty more frequently (overactive bladder), antispasmodic
medicines such as oxybutynin (Ditropan) and tolterodine (Detrol) can be helpful. If the problem is inadequate
bladder muscle contraction, then a medicine called bethanechol (Urecholine), which stimulates bladder muscles,
may help.
