MONITORING FOR DIABETIC EYE DISEASE
Diabetes doctor recommends that people with diabetes get regular eye examinations. The
screening starts five years after diagnosis in people with type 1 diabetes and at diagnosis in people with type 2
diabetes. The frequency of the eye examinations depends a little bit on the age of the patient, duration of
diabetes, and the presence of complications. At a minimum, have a comprehensive eye examination by an
ophthalmologist or optometrist every two years.
