Ideal Body Weight and Body Mass Index

There are relatively simple formulas that you can use to calculate your ideal body weight (IBW), your body mass index (BMI), and the number of calories you should eat each day.

IDEAL BODY WEIGHT

To determine your ideal body weight, use the following formula:

  • Men: 106 pounds for the first 5 feet and add 6 pounds for every additional inch over 5 feet.
  • Women: 100 pounds for the first 5 feet and add 5 pounds for every additional inch over 5 feet.

If you are large-framed you can add 10 percent to the calculated weight. For example, if you are a male who is 5 feet 8 inches tall, your ideal body weight is 106 48 154 pounds. If you are large-framed, you might weigh as much as 169 pounds.

THE BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)

BMI is a measure to estimate the degree of obesity. High BMIs are associated with increased health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, and death. To calculate your BMI, you will need your weight and height measurements. Your BMI equals your weight in pounds times 703 divided by your height in inches squared. So, for a woman who is 5 feet 3 inches tall (63 inches) and weighs 145 pounds, the BMI will be

(145 x 703)/(63 x 63) = 25.7
