I've been diabetic for 25 years, had a mild heart attack 12 years ago. Diabetes is inherited from my mothers side and heart disease is on my fathers.
My mother has developed diabetes in the last few years, my older sister has had borderline type two diabetes since childhood and her daughter has type one, developed in the last two years. My grandfather had it and his aunt had it. All together thats five generations.
I cycle everywhere and am reasonably fit, but the effects of type one diabetes as i am now 54 are beginning to tell. I have had serious problems with hypoglycemia during the last twelve months and I have a little nerve damage. I also have retinopathy (damage to blood vessels in the eyes).
This is a chronic disease and can affect people in much more serious ways than I have encountered. If you are concerned, speak to your Doctor (GP) get on the internet and look it up there are plenty of sites.
This condition is managable however and you can enjoy life just as much as anyone can. So look after yourselves and each other, eat well, exercise and don't put toxins inside you - e.g. smoking, drinking and sugary, fatty, salty foods.
