Some scientists used to suspect that a certain virus could be the cause of diabetes in young people but proof is lacking and this theory now seems very unlikely. There is certainly no ‘diabetes virus’ and you cannot catch diabetes like chickenpox. There is no suggestion that diabetes in older people could be caused by a virus infection.
