Weight loss of that tiny amount may help with lowering your A1c level, but going low carb will for sure lower it. There are a number of really good food plans that help both with weight control and glucose control.

Dr Sears Zone diet, Atkins phase 2 or 3, South Beach all have a very good effect on glucose numbers.

To lose any weight one must exercise!! I know the geniuses all say 30 minutes every other day, but that won't do much at all. Walk as fast as you can for an hour every day. At first the milage won't be much, but after 6 weeks the milage will be up and you will miss it the first time you decide to take a break. I even walk on holidays and get my guests to join me.
