Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat balanced meals with whole grains at regular times. Losing weight helps control diabetes.

Maybe its time to use insulin therapy as you seem to be a brittle diabetic and this needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
Ask him about the pros and cons of injection therapy it should help you to keep a much tighter check on your diabetes.
I am also a little confused as to why you are a diabetic as you are 24 you dont say anything about other members of the family with the complaint and indeed you say you are not overweight so it may be that you are in the early stage of type 1 diabetes which needs agrresive therapy or it will ravage your body. You also don't mention anything about Haemoglobin A1c tests these are the most accurate and best to determine your average blood glucose over the past couple of months or so.
Go talk to the doc again and ask him for a Fasting blood glucose and also a Glucose tolerance test.
You could also invest in a Blood Glucose monitor if you havent already got one.
The one touch is excellent doesnt hurt hardly at all and readings in 5 seconds.
Check out this site for extra help and advice

It will allow you to look at Blood Glucose testing systems.
Good luck and keep in touch
