Read you labels on food you buy.22 grams and under of total carbohydrate equals 1 carbohydrate. For example: I have a can of Lite sliced peaches, in pear juice. The label says 1/2 cup serving has 12 grams of total carbohydrates, this equals 1 carbohydrate. 1 CUP 1% Milk has 11 grams of total carbs. this again equals 1 carb.

My husband and I both are diabetics. Our dietision explained this to us. She gave my husband 5 carbs each meal and she gave me 4 carbs, because a woman doesn't need as much as a man.

Example : 1 slice whole wheat bread equels 1 carb
1/2 cup corn equels 1 carb
1 small fruit equels 1 carb
Well I think you see what I am trying to say. My husband eats a total of 2,000 calories a day. I eat about 1, 650 a day. We also add a small piece of meat, such as chicken for protein and a small side salad with light dressing.

a 2,000 calories diet equels about 248 total carbohydrate grams per day.

I hope this will help you. Sometime it can be confusing about grams and carbs.

your best bet is to avoide the high suger products altogether. if you eat a sensible well balanced diet you should be able to maintain a good glucose control

I just talked to a dietician today with a unique approach to a diet. Counting carbs is the new way of dieting. But she told me how to eat carbs and then check to see how much you can have without having to weigh and count. She said that one half cup of carbs of any kind, veggies, pasta, etc is approx 1 serving and equals 15 grams. You start your diet by eat 1 protein, (piece of lean meat--palm size, peanut butter--about the s-ize of the end of your thumb and thickness, or nuts--what will fit in your cupped hand, not overflowing) a fat, and any free food you desire (like salad). Wait 2 hours, take your blood sugar. If it is normal, then the next meal you can have 2 servings of carbs. Do the same test 2 hours after eating and you can move up to 3 servings if still in normal ranges. If you show a big increase in any other than 1 serving, you know you have to cut back. You have to exercise too, walking is best. And she told me I could even have a piece of cake now and then. So sugar is not verboten. You just have to watch what you eat and how. She says to look at prepared foods and read labels. If the carb count is 45 for one serving on the label, then that means for you it would be 3 so you know to cut it back to 1/3 of that serving size. I hope this makes sense. I am very excited about it and starting tomorrow, I am doing it. Wish me luck and good luck to you.
