If the diabetes is well controlled in the diabetic pregnant, there is no increased risk of abortion. Otherwise the abortion rate is incrreased due to foetal abnormalities.. Pre-eclampsia, Hydromnios, Congenital foetal anomalies, occur more frequently.Premature birth is common. There will be higher incidence of urinary tract infection, fungus vulvo vaginitis. Post partum hemorrhage is more common.
Since the mother is having diabetes it affacts the fetus and new born also.If there is keto- acidosis there will be fetal death. Congenital malfromations, overweight infants, intrauterine death in the last weeks of pregnancy, birth trauma, hyperbiluribinemia, hypoglycemia are main dangers to the fetus if the diabetes is not controlled. There is genaral increse in malformation of the infants if the diabetes is not controlled. So if the diabetic should- must- be controlled during pregnancy.

Your doctor will probably watch the size of your baby closely as it grows. Those who end up with gestational diabetes during pregnancy tend to have babies on the big size due to too much sugar absorbed by the baby from the mother's blood. See if your doctor recommends a revised diet as well as staying on your medication.

make sure you continue to take your medicine and make sure that your OB know that you have Type II diabetes.

You could have a larger than usual baby. I mean larger by size and of course, by weight. Don't be fooled by idea that a larger baby means a healthier baby. The baby MAY have mental problems such as mental retardation. A bigger baby can also cause complications when giving birth because they might become too big to pass through the birth canal, there's also increased risk of fetal distress during labor which is bad for the baby. There are medications that can be prescribed for diabetes in pregnant women. Consult your ob-gyne about your condition.
